The Voscars 2025

During Volunteer Week, from June 2nd to 8th, communities across the UK come together to recognise the incredible contributions of volunteers. Here in Lochaber, we marked the occasion with heartfelt celebrations—the VOSCARS, Voluntary Action Lochaber’s annual Volunteer Awards.

This year’s VOSCARS brought a meaningful change. Traditionally, one Volunteer of the Year was selected to represent the spirit of service in our area. But in 2025, Voluntary Action Lochaber decided to do things differently. We opened the floor to the community, inviting nominations for individuals who have made a real difference in the lives of others and the organisations they support.

The response was overwhelming—and deeply moving. Each nomination told a story of compassion, dedication, and the quiet power of giving. From those who lend a hand behind the scenes to those who lead community projects with tireless energy, the stories poured in, each one a testament to the strength of Lochaber’s volunteer spirit.

At the VOSCARS ceremonies in Acharacle and Fort William, we celebrated not just one, but many Volunteers of the Year. Each award was a moment to shine a light on someone who has gone above and beyond. Photos were taken, applause rang out, and smiles lit up the room as we honoured the people who help make Lochaber a better place for all.

This year’s host Margaret Standen of Voluntary Action Lochaber captured the spirit of the event perfectly: “Each nomination was a story of kindness, commitment, and community spirit. And today, we are proud to honour not just one, but many of you as Volunteers of the Year.”

As the celebration drew to a close, we were reminded of the true heart of our community. “Whether through quiet acts of kindness or tireless dedication behind the scenes, your contributions have not gone unnoticed,” the closing remarks noted. “You are the reason our community thrives.”

To all the volunteers recognised at this year’s VOSCARS—and to every volunteer across Lochaber—thank you. Your generosity, compassion, and commitment are what make our community shine.
