"The Financial Backbone Behind Lochaber’s Communities”
When people think about community organisations, they think about services, volunteers, events, and impact. What often goes unseen is the financial structure that keeps everything running.
At Voluntary Action Lochaber, a significant part of our work happens quietly in the background—making sure organisations are financially sound, compliant, and able to continue delivering for their communities.
In 2025, we supported 120 organisations with their accountancy and financial management. For some, this meant routine support—Payroll, Book-keeping, and Independent Examinations. For others, it meant stepping in at a critical moment.
We worked with organisations that were struggling to keep on top of financial requirements, where reporting deadlines were looming and governance pressures were building. In several cases, groups were at real risk of dissolution—not because of a lack of passion or purpose, but because the financial side had become overwhelming.
With the right support in place, those organisations were able to regain control. Accounts were brought up to date, systems were put in place, and trustees could move forward with clarity and confidence. Most importantly, services that communities rely on were able to continue.
Alongside this, we provided payroll services for 24 organisations with a total of 90 Third Sector employees, ensuring people were paid correctly and on time, and that organisations met their legal obligations as employers. We also completed 90 Independent Examinations, helping groups stay compliant and prepared for funders and regulators.
But the real value of this work goes beyond compliance. It’s about creating stability. When organisations understand their finances, they can plan, grow, and make better decisions. They can apply for funding with confidence, manage resources effectively, and focus on what they are there to do.
What makes this support particularly important in Lochaber is the nature of the sector itself. Many organisations are small, volunteer-led, and operating with limited capacity. Having access to professional financial support—without the cost of building an in-house team—can be the difference between surviving and thriving.
At VAL, we don’t just provide services. We build relationships. We take the time to understand each organisation, their challenges, and their ambitions. That allows us to offer support that is practical, proportionate, and genuinely useful.
As we look ahead, the demand for this kind of support continues to grow. Financial pressures are increasing, reporting requirements are becoming more complex, and organisations are being asked to do more with less.
Our role remains clear: to provide the financial backbone that allows Lochaber’s Third Sector to stay strong, resilient, and focused on the communities it serves.
Because when an organisation stays open, the impact doesn’t stop."
